Lawlor proud to reach milestone

10 January 2018

Ian Lawlor says it will be a proud moment if he makes his 50th start for Rovers against Plymouth Argyle this weekend.

The game will also mark a year to the day since the Irish keeper put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year-deal at the Keepmoat Stadium.

He said: “The fact I’ve potentially made 50 starts for this club in a year has shocked me as I could never have expected to achieve that in a short space of time.

“Consistency is always key for goalkeepers but as long as the team are doing well I don’t really think about plaudits too much, personally it’s a nice achievement but it’s just a start and I want to keep pushing on.

“My first year here has been the best of my career so far. With the promotion last season and playing in a team at the top of the league was really challenging but something I relished.”

Rovers go into the game against Plymouth on the back of a five match unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One, and Lawlor is confident they can extend that against Derek Adams’ side.

He added: “The main reason for the turn in league form is the amount of hard work we’ve been putting in, the players and coaching staff sat down and analysed where we could improve.

“Where we were in the league at the time didn’t do us any justice given the performances we were putting in, but we’re starting to get some luck now and things are turning our way.

“The main message was to keep doing the right things out there on the pitch and when you look back it’s really worked for us, we know the manager believes in us so he deserves massive credit.”
