John Marquis is looking to improve on last season's performances and hit the ground running in the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One campaign.

Rovers’ No.9 scored 15 goals in all competitions last season and says the early signs under new manager Grant McCann are positive.

“I am always looking to improve, as long as I have that belief and that hunger to keep pushing myself, I think it is a big positive for myself,” he said.

“Every time I have put on a Doncaster Rovers shirt I have given 100 per cent, and that is exactly what I am going to do again this season.

“He did really well at Peterborough and I think he was a little bit unfortunate to not get more time there, he wants  to come in and put his own stamp on things and the early signs are positive.”

Rovers were 1-0 winners in their first pre-season game against Alfreton Town on Saturday, and Marquis felt it was important to get off to a winning start.

“It is important in pre-season to get as many minutes as possible, but it is about winning games as well and we did that, everybody got through the game and we won the game so it was perfect,” he added.

“We played a shape that we haven’t really played before so it will take a bit of time to get used to, but the gaffer wants to put his own stamp on the game and I think you can see already that there has been an improvement in what we’re looking to do.

“I have played in a three before, it is about how you play the system, sometimes as a striker you can get isolated but if you play it correctly than you shouldn’t get isolated.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
