Grant McCann was impressed with what he saw from his squad after Rovers' 1-0 win at Alfreton Town on Saturday.
McCann's first game in charge of the club saw Joe Wright score the only goal in the game, and the manager believes that the hard work put in during his first two weeks at the helm has paid off.
"We knew coming to Alfreton would be a good test for us, they've put a completely new team together here and they were going to want to impress the new manager, just like our boys were," he said.
"It was a good chance to see the progression we've made over the last couple of weeks, especially after the week we just had in La Manga and I think that we got what we wanted from the game.
"The heat can be a leveller at times, but I thought the lads stood firm. The pitch did dry up a little bit as the game went on, but it was in great condition and we got just what we wanted out of it."
Rovers spent time in La Manga last week for some warm weather training, and McCann says the team have worked a lot on their style of play ahead of the upcoming Sky Bet League One season.
"We've been working a lot on our transition work, keeping two if not three of our forwards up front and then being able to break on teams, we did it at certain times, the pitch drying made it difficult at other times and we could have moved it a bit quicker," he added.
"It takes a lot of work to be fit and to be robust to play in the way I want us to play, I've said before that my full backs are going to have to be really fit because they're going to be covering the most ground on the pitch, and I thought they did that here.
"We're looking for the players that are going to produce and help us progress in League One this season, and on the showing here, there are a lot of encouraging signs, but there are still things to improve on before August rolls around."
Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
