Rovers manager Grant McCann feels his side have improved in every pre-season outing so far.

McCann took plenty of positives from Friday’s display against Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City.

“Some of the movement, the passing out and the link play is getting better, we’re making great strides with that from the first two games, - it’s starting to come together, but it will take a little bit of time,” he said.

“They all impressed, every single one of them gave everything, I said to them before the game to not leave anything on the pitch, just to get as much out of it as possible and run yourself into the ground because they’ll feel the benefits in the next game they play.”

Rovers’ fourth pre-season outing now comes away at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night, with a different XI likely to play 90 minutes at Blundell Park.

McCann says everyone is working hard to be ready ahead of the season’s opener away at Southend United on Saturday August 4.

“I’ve seen a real change in intensity in the way they have been training and in the way that we play, there’s a change in their pressing and their attitude and how they’re getting to know that shape and the system, and that’s starting to show,” he added.

“There has been a tremendous attitude in the sessions we have put on for them, they’ve all delivered and I’ve been really pleased with the outcome, the ones that didn’t play here trained just as hard.

“It’s a new formation and a new way of playing under a new manager for them, it’ll take a little bit of time to get used to everything, but I can see everyone coming round to it now with just over two weeks until we go at Southend.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
