Manager Grant McCann has been impressed with the way the players have handled themselves over the pre-season schedule.

Rovers came up against Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield United in their final pre-season game, and McCann says he was happy with the performance against one of the best sides in the Championship.

“It was an open and expansive game, all-in-all it was a good night’s work and all the lads were well aware that it was the final chance to impress, and a lot of players have done.” he said.

“I think we were excellent first-half in the way we approached the game, they are probably one of the best sides in the Championship and I am not too sure how we came in at 0-0 at the break.

“We just did not have that ruthless edge that I have spoken about, look it will come, their keeper made some outstanding saves to keep it level and on another day we could have been coming in at 5-4 up.

The 38-year-old has been in charge of the side for just over four weeks since taking the reins, and he has been happy with the way the players have adapted to his style of play.

“We have got pace and players that want to break, we have clever footballers that want to get possession of the ball and run, and that’s exactly how I want us to play,” he added.

“Mallik Wilks will be excellent for us this season, he is a direct footballer who isolates people, he is a strong boy who can be a bit more aggressive, but he will be a handful this year and score a lot of goals.

“I think the boys are where I want them to be, they are up to speed and looking fit, so we are all ready to go against Southend now next week.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
