Manager Grant McCann was impressed with his side’s pressing game in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

Full-back Reece Hall-Johnson’s 23rd minute strike was enough to separate the two sides on the night, but McCann says his side’s overall play was excellent.

“You could see that our fitness levels are up there now, we got into the 90th minute of the game and we were still pressing, working hard and all-in-all it’s a disappointing result but there were a lot of positives,” he said.

“We are a work in progress and I think we are getting there, our overall play was excellent but we just need to find that ruthless edge that I know we possess.

“We had a few chances in both halves of the game, but it wasn’t to be, however it is pre-season and it is good to get minutes into the players legs.”

Midfielder Ali Crawford sported the Rovers shirt for the first time since joining the club, and McCann was impressed with the way the Scotsman handled his first 90 minutes in over a year.

“Ali Crawford completed his first 90 minutes in a year or so and I was impressed with him, we brought him to the club for his appetite and his energy, and I think he deserved a goal in the end,” he added.

“I have only been in the building about three or four weeks now but you can see the different style of play, the movement and the boys are enjoying the formation.

“I think the players understand the way I want them to play, I think if you were to ask them they could tell you the way I want us to play inside out, we just have to go and deliver it now.
