McCann outlines fitness plans

19 July 2018

Rovers boss Grant McCann has confirmed plans to utilise two friendlies next week to ensure his side get enough game time in the build-up to the new season.

McCann will split his squad between Tuesday’s friendly at Grimsby Town and a trip to Deeping Rangers on Wednesday (both 7.30pm kick-offs), which was originally pencilled in as a fixture for Rovers’ Development side.

He said: “We want to get 90 minutes for some of the boys against Birmingham City on Friday, then we’ll use the Deeping Rangers game inbetween the Grimsby and Sheffield Untied friendlies to make sure we get two lots of 90 minutes into people.”

McCann’s plan for James Coppinger and Tommy Rowe would also see them feature in a young Rovers squad which heads to Staveley Miners Welfare on Monday July 30 (7.30pm).

Both are scheduled to feature in Friday’s game against Birmingham City as they step up their comebacks from injury.

McCann added: “Copps and Tommy Rowe will both get 45 minutes on Friday then we’ll look to give them the same again on Tuesday. Tommy has looked incredible in training, and his return will be a big boost for everyone.

“Then, if all goes well, they could join the U18 squad at Staveley to get a longer period under their belts and set them up for the start of the season.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
