Ben Whiteman was pleased to get off the mark in Tuesday night’s 5-0 win at Frickley Athletic.

Whiteman scored the second goal in the victory, his first in pre-season, and says it was been a good workout for the team.

“It was good to get another 45 minutes under our belts again, we’ve got five goals and a clean sheet as a team so we’re all happy, I don’t think that we could ask for too much more than that,” he said.

“These games are all about learning what the manager wants from us as players, we’ve been doing a lot of work in training and getting used to what the gaffer wants, we’re trying to score more goals and keep clean sheets and we’ve done just that.

“It’s always nice to score no matter what the game is or where, pre-season or in the league it’s always good, all the lads that scored got their first goals of pre-season so that’s good too, it shows we’re heading in the right direction.”

Tuesday night’s trip to Frickley was manager Grant McCann’s second game in charge of Rovers, and Whiteman says the new gaffer has set out his stalls early in regards to what he expects from his side.

“We all want a good start to the new season, as a team we want to win promotion, the manager has stated that, and that’s why I signed here in the first place, I want to play in the Championship and beyond,” he added.

“I think it showed that we didn’t score enough goals last season, this year we really want to take the league by storm and score as many goals as we can, that way we can push on at the right end of the league.

“The manager has come in with his aspirations for the side, everything fits, and I think that’s what we need to get us up to the Championship, with the way that we have started I don’t see why we can’t do just that either.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
