Gym work pays off for Andrew

27 June 2018

Danny Andrew is ready to show Rovers fans his true ability this season after spending the summer in the gym preparing for pre-season.

The left-back spent most of the season on the sidelines after a serious knee injury that he suffered away at AFC Wimbledon in August, and has spent his close season ensuring he is in top shape for the new season.

“We’ve had a bit of time away so it’s an important first couple of days back running again, and then getting in to doing a lot of ball work early on, but all the lads are in good spirit after returning to training,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot of strength work on my knee. I went on holiday for a little bit, but even when you’re abroad you’re still working, still going in the gym, I had to keep myself ticking over and I didn’t really give myself much rest.

“I went through the full pre-season last year and came out of it feeling fine, but then I got the injury at the end of August, but hopefully I can come out of it well this year and then start the season strongly and maintain that throughout and play a lot more.”

Andrew reported back for pre-season training on Monday, and is aiming for a return to competitive action on August 4 when Rovers line-up at Roots Hall to face Southend United.

“I guess that my summer was probably a little bit different to the other lads, they’ll all have played a lot of games last season whereas I played the first few and then got injured and was done for the year, so a lot of my summer was based in the gym,” he added.

“I came in last season off the back of 50-plus games, so I know that I’ve got it in the tank to be able to complete a full season with no problems.

“My knee feels good too which is the main thing, and that means that there’s no reason now why I can’t stay fit for the whole season. I feel fine and fully fit, and I’m raring to go once again.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
