Alex Kiwomya is relishing the prospect of getting a full pre-season under his belt, after missing out in 2017/18 due to a rare illness.
The forward did not even complete the first session then as he was suffering with the rare autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre syndrome - something which was only diagnosed after time in hospital.
He said: “I had to pull out of the first run last pre-season and so I’m just happy to have got through the first day of training, it’s a good introduction into doing everything again. Hopefully everything goes alright this time round and I can start the season strongly.
“It’s been a light introduction back into it, we started with a couple of tests and various bits of running to get us going and to see how our heart rate is early on. It does feel good to be back at the training ground and with a ball at my feet.”
Kiwomya improvised some warm weather training over the summer which, in conjunction with the club’s fitness schedule, ensured he was not daunted by starting pre-season in the heatwave which has hit the United Kingdom.
He added; “Fitness coach Rob Lee set us all up a training programme to do over the summer and I like to do my fitness on my own too, I went over to Egypt myself and did a bit of hot weather training over there - with the weather being how it is this week it’s worked out well.
“The competition in my position is great, there’s loads of strikers at the club but we all get on very well. The competition is there but we all know that we play well together.”
Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
