Assistant manager Gavin Strachan says he will be looking to senior professionals in the squad to set the pace in the first week of pre-season.
The players return to Cantley Park on Monday June 25 ahead of the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One season, and Strachan says the sports science department will take the lead in the first week of training.
“James Coppinger and Andy Butler are always at the front of the queue when it comes to the running, and they lay down the gauntlet to the younger players within the squad,” he said.
“The first week of pre-season you would see the sports science department take a big lead on that in terms of the fitness testing, it’s a bit of a reintroduction, the same goes for the football side as well.
“We would expect the players to have looked after themselves while they have been on holiday, there has been a change in the way players look after themselves over the years, so that won’t be a problem.”
Rovers face Alfreton Town in the first pre-season friendly of the season on July 7, and Strachan says the side will work on the tactical side of the game in the week leading up to the game.
“There is a benefit from the players coming back in better condition, that means we can get into the football side of things a bit quicker.” he added.
“You would build on it from there, towards of the second week, with a game on the horizon you would then start to work on the tactical side of the game, not in great detail, but it’s about getting the balance right.
“The way the first few games of pre-season are set up against Alfreton and Frickley, is that you will more than likely have a lot of possession, and that in turn gives you the chance to concentrate on the more attacking side of the game.”
