Ben Whiteman says he learnt a lot during his first season with Rovers.
Whiteman signed permanently with Rovers in January after spending the first half of the season on-loan from Sheffield United, and he believes he will grow as a player while at the Keepmoat Stadium.
“This has been my first season in League One, and it’s very tough both mentally and physically, I think it’s been a case of getting through it and then kicking on next year,” he said.
“I feel I’ve developed massively as a player during the last season, that’s one of the main reasons that I signed permanently, I just wanted to kick on and I’m looking forward to seeing what is to come for me.
“I’m trying to learn every position that I’ve played in recently, I don’t mind where I have to do a job I just want to be in the side and that will only help me improve and become the best player I can.”
Whiteman made more than 40 appearances for Rovers in his first season, and he says he is happy to have a role anywhere within the team, wherever possible.
“After I signed a new deal, my standards maybe dropped slightly from what I expect from myself, I spent time out of the side which was deserved I think, but I’ve come back in and I feel that I’ve done okay,” he added.
“At the moment, I wouldn’t label myself as this or that in terms of what position I play within the team, I just want to keep improving, whether that be learning in an attacking role or a defensive one, it is what it is I just want to play all the time and help the side improve.
“I felt I really needed that time away from the side, just to reflect on my performances more than anything, hopefully now I’ll continue to improve and develop, and really just kick on ready for what’s ahead."
