Darren Ferguson believes Joe Wright and Louis Jones have plenty of potential after taking up the club’s options to extend their contracts until the summer of 2019.
Defender Wright has impressed this season, and Ferguson is keen to secure his services for the club on a long-term basis.
“We tried to extend his contract be we decided to put negotiations on hold until the end of the season and we will go back to it in the summer,” he said.
“Joe is a very good player and has got a lot of development left in him, I think you always have to have one eye on the long-term as well as the short-term and these two are very much part of that.”
Ferguson has also taken the option to extend goalkeeper’s Louis Jones’ contract by a further 12-month and has high hopes for the 19-year-old, who has spent time on loan with Gainsborough Trinity and Sheffield FC.
“Louis has done very well and we have hopes for him here, he has gone out on loan and has shown that he is a very capable goalkeeper,” he added.
“He has the right temperament which is very important in his position, and it was a no brainer that we were always going to take the option now and then make a decision if we are going to send him back out on loan or not.
“We certainly feel like he has a chance, myself and the goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard like him, he’s a level headed lad and a good size for a ‘keeper, we have seen enough improvement in him for him to kick on again.”
