Wright looking to build

8 March 2018

Defender Joe Wright is looking to build on a successful season after Rovers exercised a clause in his contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2019.

The Welshman has made 33 appearances in all competitions during the 2017/18 campaign, and wants to take this season’s performances into the next.

“I am delighted to have another year added onto my contract, it has been an enjoyable season so far and hopefully that can continue in to the next,” he said.

“I think I have done well this season, the gaffer said to me at the start of the season that he wanted me to step up and be a bigger part of the first-team compared to last year and I think I have done that.

“Thankfully I wasn’t out as long as I thought I was going to be I think I have come back two weeks earlier than expected, which is great credit to the physio department.”

Wright has had to battle with Tom Anderson, Mathieu Baudry, Andy Boyle and Andy Butler over the course of the season for a starting place, but the centre-back says competition can only be a good thing.

“There is healthy competition at the back now and once everyone is back from injury it will be a good battle, Andy Butler will be back soon as well so there will be a fair few of us fighting for that shirt,” he added.

“I think the competition in the squad can only be a good thing, you saw it last season when I was pushing Mathieu Baudry and now he is pushing me this year.

“The new deal now allows me to concentrate on my football and not worry about if the manager will be offering me a new deal or not, so it is a weight off my shoulders.”

Tickets for the game against Bradford City on Monday March 19 at the Keepmoat Stadium are available from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
