Selby High: national champions

25 May 2018

Players from Selby High School travelled to Derby Arena on Thursday to represent Doncaster Rovers in the Joy of Moving futsal national finals and came home as champions.

Unbeaten in the group stages, they sailed through to the semi-finals where they comfortably knocked out an excellent Chelsea FC side, and they sealed off a perfect day with a 1-0 win in the final against Exeter City to be crowed national final winners by the EFL Trust.

"What an incredible day and experience, I knew the group were a talented bunch back in April when we won the regional finals, but to go on and win the national finals is just simply outstanding - I am so proud of them," said teacher Steve Morton.

"Just to represent Doncaster Rovers is an honour and it just hasn't sunk in yet, they really are a fantastic set of lads and I know how hard they have worked for it, it's a great feeling.

"I must say a big thank you to Kelly Jackson and the team at Club Doncaster Foundation - their support has been first class and we were thrilled to share the day with them."

"I can't describe this feeling - we really dug deep for that and I'm so proud of the team," captain Nathan Gorst added.

"It was an amazing feeling to beat Chelsea in the semi-finals, we were all buzzing with that result obviously because of their reputation, so it was great we could keep our heads after that to do a job in the final too.

"We've had a wicked day and I'm really thankful to Club Doncaster Foundation for the opportunity."

512 school teams entered the competition, with the side now boasting the incredible status of being the best in the country.
