Alfie May felt he took his chance in the Rovers side after netting a brace against Grimsby Town in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The striker scored either side of the break to give Rovers their first win in the competition this season.
He said: “It was good to get the win, the gaffer has said from the off that we want to do well in the competition so we’re pleased with the result.
“My first goal was probably the best I’ve scored and it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, it’s the first time I’ve scored two in a Rovers shirt.
“I think I could have scored more, I wanted to take the match ball home but overall I’m happy with the work I’ve put in.”
May says he’s hoping to have put himself in the frame for a starting role in Saturday’s game against Rochdale in Sky Bet League One.
He added: “I woke up knowing that the game was my chance to try and put myself in a good position to start on Saturday.
“It’s down to the gaffer to pick the team but I think a lot of the boys who came in did well throughout the game.
“Speaking to a few of the lads we knew this was an opportunity and we owed a performance after a couple of disappointing results in the cup competitions.”
Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday October 20 to take on Gillingham in Sky Bet League One. Tickets are available from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
