Alfie May says he’s working hard in training to earn a place in Grant McCann’s starting XI this season.

The striker has started once in the league so far, featuring mainly as an impact player from the substitute’s bench.

He said: “I want to try and impress the manager, when I come off the bench and in training I just want to give my best.

“The front three have been superb so coming on you just have to do a job, it pushes you on when you know there’s pressure on.

“There are plenty of games to come and hopefully I will get a chance and then keep the shirt for a run of games.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend to take on Fleetwood Town, and May says the squad are keen to get back to winning ways after defeat at Accrington Stanley on Tuesday.

He added: “Saturday’s game is a massive one for us to get something out of because we were all disappointed with the Accrington result.

“Plymouth was a long trip for us and then we went to Accrington on Tuesday so we’ve done a lot of travelling.

“We’ve just got to get on with it because travelling is part of the game, but we’re looking forward to being back at home this weekend.”
