Grant McCann praised his side’s character after they came from behind twice to earn a draw with Gillingham in Sky Bet League One.

Second-half goals from John Marquis, Mallik Wilks and Paul Taylor secured a point after Rovers trailed 2-0 and 3-2 at the Keepmoat Stadium, and McCann felt they did enough for at least a share of the spoils.

He said: “Credit to my players for the belief they showed in the second half to get themselves back level.

“It was probably one of the most one sided games in terms of shots on goal, we were on the front foot for most of it.

“I think it’s a game we could have won, but my last message to the boys was if you can’t win the game then make sure you don’t get beat.”

Rovers face fellow play-off chasing side Sunderland on Tuesday night, and McCann believes they can take confidence from the way they fought back against the Gills.

He added: “Some of our play was excellent, they struggled to live with us and I think they will be happy to be going away with a point.

“We knew before the game that they had a lot of threats, and we gave them a start on us but did well to get back into it.

“It showed our character that even after conceding late we managed to get back on level terms, and then almost got the winner.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to take on Sunderland on Tuesday October 23, with tickets available from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
