Manager Grant McCann says he is not surprised that his side have defied outside expectations after a good start to the Sky Bet League One season.

Rovers have lost just once in their opening seven games of the campaign, winning three and drawing three, leaving them lying in seventh position in the table, and he believes there is a lot more to come from his side as the season progresses.

“We’ve changed people’s opinions and perceptions about us so far this season, many tipped us to struggle this season and we’ve started off fairly well, we want to keep doing that now and keep proving people wrong,” he said.

“If you want to reach the play-offs or get promoted, you need to be aiming for an average of two points a game, we’re a little bit short of that at the minute but we’ve got five games in this mini-cycle of six left to change that.

“We’ve had a tough start in my opinion against teams that we’re tipped to be up near the top of this league, but it’s early doors and you still can’t say for sure that teams will be up there, it’s important that we stay grounded and stay focused on what’s ahead of us.”

Rovers make the trip to the West Midlands on Saturday when they face Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium, with the Saddlers yet to be on the losing side in the league, but McCann feels that patience could be the key to success at the weekend.

“It’s a good game for us and we want to make sure we go there and put in a good performance, they’ll make it tough for us because they work very hard and they’ve got a lot of pace in the side too, it’s all about how we manage it,” he added.

“We want to make sure that we carry on the good form that we have shown over the majority of this season so far, we know we might have to be patient at times, we’ll have to find away into the game we’ll have to be clinical.

“We’ve shown that we can dig in and grind out a result when we need to, our focus will never change, we always want to remain on the front foot, we want to be high and aggressive, be in other people’s faces and work hard when on the ball.”
