Grant McCann paid tribute to striker John Marquis as the No.9 prepares to make his 100th league appearance for Rovers this weekend.

Marquis has already netted seven goals in all competitions this season, and the manager says he is a credit to himself.

He said: “He is a very important part of the squad, what he’s done for the football club during his time here is brilliant.

“He’s close to 50 goals which is a goal every two games, it’s a great scoring record and in my opinion he is one of the best strikers in this league.

“We’re lucky to have him, he drives the standards every day in training and never settles for second best.”

Marquis is seen as one of the more senior figures in the Rovers squad, and McCann says he leads by example on and off the field.

He added: “He is constantly on at the group and he is a key reason why the concentration of the group is always right up there.

“Along with the likes of James Coppinger, Tommy Rowe and Andy Butler, those experienced heads make sure the younger players don’t get carried away.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and works as hard in training as he does during a game, he deserves the goals because I believe you get out of things what you put in.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to take on Fleetwood Town on Saturday October 6. Tickets are available from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk
