Two second-half goals ensured Rovers U18s remain at the top of their division after beating Oldham.

Captain AJ Greaves set the standards of the team early in the game as he always got stuck-in, producing crunching sliding tackles to really make life difficult for the Latics. As well as providing pivotal balls through midfield to really architect attacks.

Rovers’ first big chance came when a ball was delivered in from the right and Myron Gibbons guided the ball straight into the arms of the Latics keeper.

A golden chance went begging for Rovers when AJ threaded a ball through midfield – finding an open Rieves Boocock who then frustratingly scooped the ball over goal.

It wasn’t until the second-half that the deadlock was broken as Elliott Walker curled an effort into the top corner from the right-side of midfield.

Rovers’ work was not done there as there was still defending to be done to keep the lead in tact with Branden Horton making a vital goal-line clearance to deny Oldham a way back into the game.

On the hour mark, Rovers won a penalty when Cameron Barnett was a mowed down in the box.

U18 top goal-scorer Boocock took the penalty, tucking the ball tightly into the bottom left corner – leaving Oldham’s keeper hopelessly stretching.

Gibbons floated a ball into the box and Boocock rose to meet, but he was unfortunate in seeing his chance fly over.

The comfortable victory means Rovers remain top of their table by a point with two games to go after Bradford City beat Mansfield Town.
