Rovers Academy U12 saw off tough competition to be crowned champions in a tournament against local academies which was held at Sheffield United's academy.

Rovers U12 came out on top when they competed in the nine-a-side football tournament against two Sheffield United teams, Rotherham, Lincoln City, and Donegal.

Each of the six teams played one-another once with Rovers winning three and drawing one of their five matches. Top striker Charlie took the plaudits as he fired the side to victory, but the team’s defence should be commended for keeping clean sheets in four of their five matches.

Rovers finished the tournament two points ahead of the joint second and third placed sides (Donegal and Rotherham), had the highest goals scored and fewest goals conceded. A comprehensive win.

Doncaster Rovers Academy head of foundation phase Tom Sutton said: “It was great for the U12s to be involved in a tournament like this, it’s a really good opportunity for them to take part in competitive sport and is a key part of their learning process. It was a really enjoyable day for us, and everyone involved, and the tournament was really well run and well organised.

“To come away with the trophy was just an added bonus but I’m sure it’s given the boys a lift before they go to the Milano Football Festival in Milan which is held in the Easter Holidays. They will be competing against Academies from all across Europe which is an amazing thing for them to be part of.”
