James Coppinger says he is looking forward to seeing the Rovers squad develop in the 2019/20 campaign.
The club captain is heading into his 16th season with the club, and says there is a lot of potential within the group.
He said: “The league is getting tougher and the teams are getting stronger every year, there are some big clubs coming down from the Championship.
“Even the teams that have come up from League Two have got big ambitions so it will be a really interesting year.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond and the character that they will have to show throughout the season.”
With Gillingham as the visitors to the Keepmoat Stadium on the opening day of the season, Coppinger says the excitement levels remain the same for him.
He added: “It’s always nice to start off at home, being in front of our home fans will be a bonus and the form at the Keepmoat last season was really good.
“A win would get us off the mark nicely and we’re all hoping for a good crowd, there’s always a lot of excitement from the fans.
“Over the years we’ve had some really good wins on the first day, we want that to carry on against Gillingham but we know how tough it will be with the players they have recruited.”
