Left-Back Reece James says Rovers supporters can help inspire the players this season.
James looks set for his second outing at the Keepmoat Stadium as a Rovers player on Saturday when Fleetwood Town visit, and the former Wigan and Sunderland man was impressed by the backing in his first competitive appearance against Gillingham two weeks’ ago.
He said: “My first appearance at the Keepmoat Stadium was really good, it was nice to sample that atmosphere for the first time.
“The fans were great and they’re going to have a big part to play this season both at home and when we’re on the road. Even when we went behind in the game they stuck with us which as a new player is always great to see.”
James was a new addition to the squad this summer, but he feels the best bit of business was keeping captain Ben Whiteman at the club having seen the influence he has on the squad first-hand during pre-season.
He added: “Ben is a really good player and he was always somebody who stood out for the club last season especially in the big games. It’s important to try and keep hold of players like him because he does parts of the game that can sometimes go unnoticed.
“We’ve managed to keep him with us and it shows the quality he has got with him being named as the captain. We’ve got a good core group of players and I know the manager has worked hard to bring players in, and is still doing so.”
