Deacon gets to meet his heroes after TV appeal

Rovers supporter Deacon Shawcroft was treated to a behind-the-scenes trip to the club's training ground after his plea for James Coppinger's shirt was featured live on Match Of the Day.

Deacon, 10, made a public appeal for Coppinger's shirt via a large tin foil replica of the FA Cup which he took to Sunday's fifth-round tie against Crystal Palace - and was picked out by photographers and BBC camera operators.

The Season Membership holder missed out on the souvenir on the day as Coppinger did not spot him among the sellout crowd at the Keepmoat Stadium, but after watching back the footage asked club staff to track down the youngster and invited him down to the club's Cantley Park training ground on Thursday morning.

As well as receiving Coppinger's matchday shirt, signed by the player, Deacon met all the first-team squad and watched on as they prepared for Saturday's trip to Scunthorpe United - which will also be Deacon's first away trip as a Rovers fan.

Deacon said: "I made the trophy the night before the match and because James Coppinger is my favourite player thought I would ask for his shirt, although I didn't get it on the day I can't believe he saw the sign and invited me down.

"It was amazing to meet him and the players and see what the training ground is like. I'm hoping for another cup run next season so I can make another trophy and get another shirt!"

Coppinger added: "I didn't see the sign on the day because there is so much going on during a matchday, in fact it was my dad who text me to make sure I saw it and there was no way we couldn't sort him out with the shirt.

"Because it was half-term we were able to get him down, and as well as giving him the shirt he asked for I was able to introduce him to the lads and show him some of what we do in training."
