Grant McCann praised his side’s character after Tuesday night’s Sky Bet League One win over Southend United which strengthened Rovers’ play-off aspirations.
Goals from John Marquis, Mallik Wilks, and Herbie Kane eventually made for a comfortable night for Rovers.
“It was a good professional performance. We started the game a little bit slowly, we knew Southend United would come at us early and they made it very difficult for us in the opening stages of the game but I felt after that we controlled the game and created numerous opportunities to score,” McCann said.
“We could have scored more but we’ll take the 3-0, we’d have taken 1-0 to be honest. It was a game we wanted to win because it was one of our games in hand and the character we showed to win it the way we did was outstanding.
“They’re a tremendous group of players, I’m proud of the way they performed tonight after a tough game at the weekend. We hit 8 or 9s out of tens throughout the team and if you do that, you’ve got a really good chance of winning the game.”
The match had been rearranged due to Rovers’ ongoing involvement in the Emirates FA Cup and was one of Rovers games in hand over the teams around them and McCann believes that victory gives his team a boost.
“That was a big game in-terms of that psychological mind set,” he added.
“Teams can look up and see us starting to chase the teams above us and we want to keep up that momentum.
“It’s a massive challenge to stay in that top six, if you look at the clubs in there, there are some huge clubs but we’re doing our best to stay in there and keep putting pressure on the ones above us.
“We just keep trying to improve and I think we’re doing that. If you look at the first game of the season against Southend and the game tonight, there’s been a massive improvement. We feel as if, on our day, we can beat anyone in the league.”
