Cody Prior is setting his sights on first team action after Rovers exercised an option on the young midfielder’s contract.

19-year-old Prior will stay at the club until summer 2020 and believes that Grant McCann’s faith in him is aiding his development.

“My main goal for this season was to make sure that I’ll be here next year. I feel like I’ve worked hard and earned my deal,” he said.

“I got my professional contract last season under the previous manager but Grant McCann’s come in and has had a lot of belief in me and I’ve gained a lot of confidence from that and that’s helped me and my development this year. I feel like I’ve come on a lot as a player.

“The manager talks to be, gives me advice on what I should be doing or could be doing, that’s been really helpful. The next aim is to break into the first team but that’s a tough task as we probably have one of the best midfields in the league.”

Prior captains Rovers’ Development side and he has said that playing and training alongside first-team players has helped him improve.

“Getting game time and being the captain of the U23s is good and being around the first team when they’re coming back from injury helps me out a lot for me and my personal development,” he added.

“Copps is always helping and having a word with me, same with Andy Butler and Tommy Rowe, they’ve just giving me good advice really. When the likes of Butler and Rowe are playing for the Development team, they help us out, it’s great to have them on the pitch.

“We train with the first team all the time, so I can see what they’re doing every week and they can see how I’m developing so they talk to me and help me out. There’s a really togetherness around the squad, everyone wants everyone to do well and everyone feels a part of it and part of the team. It feels like a collective effort for the team to get promoted.”
