Grant McCann believes Burton Albion will present a difficult challenge when they visit the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.
The Brewers currently sit 11th in the table and were unbeaten in four before defeat at Manchester City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final and McCann thinks that winning the battle in midfield will be key to earning three points on Saturday.
“Burton Albion aren’t far away from being a team that challenges for the top six. They’re similar to us in terms of their style of play, they’ve got energy and goalscorers in their team, and they’re experienced at the back,” said McCann.
“Obviously they’ve conceded 12 goals in their last two games but you have to consider most of those were against Man City who could hit anyone for nine or ten because that’s how good they are.
“I think winning midfield is going to be key, we’ve been outstanding in there but we need to make sure our midfield is better than theirs on Saturday.”
Rovers lost one-nil in the reverse fixture earlier in the season but McCann has said his side are determined to put that right this weekend.
“We know we let ourselves down a little bit at their place and we want to put that right,” he said.
“The match at Burton was a game which we felt we underachieved, we played a bit into their hands, we didn’t have the control of the game that I would have liked. Burton were good on the day and we weren’t, but we know what we have to do this time, we have to put our plan into action.
“We’ve got to worry about ourselves. We’ve got four out of five of the next league games at home and our home form is going to be key. If we can pick as many points up from these games as possible, it’s going to put us in a good place and then we’ll be right in the mix.”
