Rovers will face fellow Sky Bet League One sides Lincoln City and Rotherham United in the group stages of the EFL Trophy (formerly Checkatrade Trophy).
The final place in the four-team group will be taken up by an invited U21 Premier League team – this place will be decided by a draw which will take place at Friday July 12 at 12.30pm.
The invited U21 teams in the northern draw are: Aston Villa, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
