John Schofield was impressed by the professionalism of Rovers as they secured a solid win over Rossington Main in their opening pre-season match of 2019/20.
Goals from Alfie May and Max Watters came either side of an own goal to make it a comfortable victory for Rovers on an evening which focused more on match fitness than results.
Schofield said: “It was good to see some of the younger lads get on today and it was also good to see how the senior players conducted themselves. They’ve been a credit to themselves and the football club. This is how the younger ones learn by mixing with the senior players.
“It’s been good to let the fans see the players back because we all miss football in the summer. The plan is now to get back to it on Wednesday and begin preparation for Gainsborough on Saturday. It will most likely be another game of two 45’s at the weekend.
“We’re in the exact same position as we would’ve been had the gaffer had stayed, we have a fully fit squad who have played two different formations but they’re fit and ready to go so the new manager can concentrate on his technical and tactical stuff when he comes in.”
Schofield fielded two teams across 45-minutes with the intention of boosting squad fitness levels ahead of the start of the season
He added: “We spoke to the lads before the game and it is just about getting them 45-minutes in each and getting through it and making sure that we don’t pick any injuries up obviously the task we set them was to win your 45-minutes which they did and we have not conceded so it has been a good day.
“At the minute it is about making sure we have a fully fit squad that’s got minutes under their belt so that when a new manager takes over he has an up-to-speed squad that is fit and they have minutes under their belt and they’re injury-free.
“It was really good in La Manga and very hot, there was loads for the players to do and the facilities were fantastic. While out there it was football all the way and we went out with the aim to come back with no injuries and we achieved that through the planning and preparation from all of the staff.”
