Coppinger relishes underdog tag

13 June 2019

James Coppinger believes Rovers can take plenty of belief from the way the 2018/19 season finished as they look ahead to the new campaign.

Rovers pushed Charlton Athletic all the way in the League One play-offs semi-final, and the belief shown to take the Addicks all the way to a penalty shootout will leave Coppinger and his team-mates in good stead for the upcoming season.

He said: “The season was eventful, we started and set our goals in La Manga at the start of the season and we’ve ticked them off to an extent including a fantastic cup run and to play a Premier League side at home was brilliant for everybody involved.

“To then get into the play-offs and put in a performance like we did to take Charlton all the way to penalties was something that is frustrating not get to Wembley and not having that opportunity to get promoted.

“But at the same time, the character we showed that day is exactly what we need going forward into this season.”

Rovers were underdogs throughout 2018/19, a tag Coppinger is happy for he and his team-mates to continue to have.

He added: “We are always the underdogs, I’ve been part of this club for 15 years and it has always been the case.

“It suits me and it suits the player's it gives us a spring board to go and prove people wrong. That’s what we’ve kept doing and that’s what we’ll keep doing.”
