Danny Andrew update

17 June 2019

Grant McCann says he is close to signing a new left-back after confirming that Danny Andrew is no longer extending his time at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The left-back will leave the club after two years despite previously reaching an agreement for him to stay.

McCann said: “We agreed a deal with Danny and his agent which would have seen him rewarded for a good season, we wanted it signed before he got married then before he went on his honeymoon but it didn’t happen. We then provided a deadline for Danny to sign the contract as we wanted to resolve the situation but were subsequently told by the player’s agent he had received an alternative offer.

“Unfortunately that’s how football works, but we wish Danny well and thank him for his efforts last season.

"We’ve known Danny was out of contract for some time so have been exploring other avenues for the past few months to ensure we knew what we would do if he left. We've reached an agreement with another club to sign a left back on a permanent deal. This player has experience in League One and will be a valuable addition to the club.”

McCann is working hard to improve the Rovers squad for the 2019/20 Sky Bet League One campaign and expects some progression on further targets within the next week too.

He said: “We identified the areas we want to strengthen to make us better next season, and I’ve spoken to a lot of people.

“We are always having conversations with players but the key is to bring in players that want to play for Rovers and who will improve us as a team.  We’re now getting closer to being able to announce some of those deals.”
