Fit-again Wright relishing return for pre-season

23 June 2019

Joe Wright is looking forward to getting stuck into pre-season after missing the latter part of the 2018/19 campaign with injury.

An ankle injury meant the defender’s season was curtailed after October, with just two substitute appearances to his name in the second part of the campaign - but coming off the bench against Charlton Athletic in the play-off semi-final provided a boost ahead of the summer break.

He said: “Getting some game time against Charlton wasn’t expected after the operation so it was nice to get some minutes, and it is a credit to the physio department that managed to get me out there.

“For the club it has been a great season – albeit with a disappointing end to the play-offs – but for me it hasn’t been an enjoyable one as it has been frustrating sat on the sidelines.”

Wright signed a contract extension during the season committing himself to the club until 2021, allowing him to focus solely on his recovery.

He added: “It has been relaxing that I haven’t had the pressure of worrying about my contract situation, it was nice for me to put that deal to bed.

“I’ve just got to manage myself after my injury and continue to do the work on my ankle then treat it like any other pre-season with running and gym work.”
