Lawlor cannot wait to get going again

25 June 2019

Ian Lawlor cannot wait to get going again after an injury-hit campaign kept him out for half of the 2018/19 season.

The Irish keeper was able to return to the bench for Rovers’ final play-off game against Charlton Athletic after picking up a shoulder injury in January 2019.

He said: “Personally it was nice to be on the bench against Charlton because I didn’t think I was going to get back in until pre-season, so to comeback a couple weeks early was nice for myself.

“We can take a lot from the Charlton game and be proud of what we’ve achieved and the character shown, we dug deep and we just have to take that into the new season and hit the ground running when we get back.

“We were written off from the start and we all knew that, but we knew the qualities that we had. From day one the gaffer was drilling confidence into us and he made us believe in ourselves and that’s what we’ve done.”

Lawlor signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2021, something which helped him keep focused during his five-month long rehabilitation.

He added: “It was difficult because I wasn’t playing at the start of the season and I came back into the team and thought I did well, but then I got that big injury. It is part and parcel of football, but the manager still rewarded me with a new two-year deal.

“Signing that made my rehab a little bit easier because I had a goal to work to at the end of it, and to get on the bench against Charlton made it all worthwhile.

“It is a normal summer for me now, after a couple of weeks off just relaxing and recharging the batteries I’ll get back to work ready for pre-season again. I can’t wait to get back.”
