Whiteman: No let up during close season

26 June 2019

Ben Whiteman is looking forward to his second full season in a Rovers shirt after coming close to promotion last season.

The squad will return to the Cantley Park training ground later in June, but even though the players are on a break between campaigns there can be no drop off in professionalism.

Whiteman said: “You get a programme and you enjoy your holiday, and then you have to get straight back down to earth and get ready for pre-season.

“That is the life of being a professional footballer. It is more professional than ever, I think you can see how the game’s changing especially higher up the leagues.

“You’ve got to come back in good shape otherwise you will get found out, we can’t turn up in horrendous shape otherwise you’ll be in trouble.”

The midfielder says Rovers can take a lot of positives from their play-off semi-final against Charlton Athletic, pushing the Addicks all the way with victory on the night in the second leg at The Valley.

He added: “I don’t think many from outside of the football club would have expected us to do so well in the second leg, I thought we were the best team on the pitch by a mile.

“Obviously one team had to win and unfortunately it was them on penalties, but I think that we can take a lot of credit from that night. We did show as a team how good we are.”
