Matty Blair has said that, while nice, he does not do his community work for the awards after he was announced as EFL and PFA Sky Bet League One Community Player of the Year on March 18.

It is the second consecutive year that Blair has won the award as he continues to set the standard for community engagement across League One. He has been rewarded for his tireless dedication to community projects around Doncaster including Fit Rovers which he is now ambassador of.

“I understand the very privileged position I’m in and when I’m asked to do something in the community, who am I to turn that down?” he said.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to be involved in everything I do off the field and it’s nice to be rewarded for that but, and I’m sure you hear people say this all the time, I don’t do it for the rewards, I do it for the community and the people because I genuinely do care.

“Every player gets asked to do player appearances and that can be anything meeting with fans in the shop, visiting the schools, I got heavily involved in Fit Rovers and I became a bit of an ambassador for that and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed that. I’ve taken the chances to do more.”

While Blair leads the way for the League, he was quick to praise his teammates’ commitment to community visits and projects too.

“This group of players we have are incredible both on and off the field. It’s pretty rare that you get such a big groups that are willing to do most community things. It’s great that everyone are willing to get involved but we love spending time together, we enjoy each other’s company and as long as everyone is smiling, it makes for a happy place.”
