Rovers got off to a blistering start in their 3-1 victory over Walsall. Goals from John Marquis (penalty) and Mallik Wilks within the opening four minutes set the tone while Danny Andrew’s goal direct from a free-kick capped off a successful afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Rovers have moved five points clear of seventh place after picking up six points in four days and McCann praised his side's professionalism in getting the job done against a side who are fighting for their lives.
“I thought it was a professional performance,” he said.
“I made a real point to the players that it was important not to look at Walsall’s results because their performances have been excellent in the last four or five games. They were brilliant against Sunderland and they probably should have beaten Barnsley so it was pleasing that we scored a couple of goals early.
“For ten or fifteen minutes in the first half, we were a bit sloppy and lacked a bit of composure. We were a bit slow in reacting to losing the ball, but the boys put a massive shift in on Tuesday so that’s probably to be expected. The first half was a bit of a mix, some really good bits and some sloppy bits but in the second half, we were really professional.”
Walsall carried a threat throughout the game, they had an effort hit the bar and several cleared off the line and McCann was keen to praise his side’s defensive efforts as well as his goalkeeper.
“Marko Marosi is on top form at the moment and that’s what we need in this part of the season,” he said.
“Walsall have scored from set plays in eight out of their last ten games, so we knew they were a big, big threat from that but apart from the goal, I thought we defended them quite well. I was pleased with how resolute we were against a team who went pretty direct in the second half.
“We’ve got sheer belief amongst the staff and players that we can achieve what we want to achieve. We’ve got ourselves into a good position but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We’ve got a big job ahead at Bradford who are fighting for their lives and then an even bigger job in these final few games.”
