Paul Stancliffe rued his sides missed chances as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Burton Albion in the EFL Youth Division.
Rovers were made to pay for their missed chances as Burton finished both of their only clear-cut opportunities to punish the young players.
He said: “It is obvious where it went wrong because you look at the result and see 2-0 and that tells you we failed to score goals.
“I’ve told them after the game that we were quite good at the back and through midfield, but we didn’t get enough from those upfront. We didn’t caused a threat and that was where we let ourselves down massively.
“At half-time I challenged the lads to keep playing how we had been because we had worked the ball well up until we got into the final third. Then it went a bit flat but you get to the break at only one goal down and you you’ve got a chance to hopefully create something - we never felt out of it.”
With a two week break before their next Youth Alliance game against Lincoln City, Stancliffe is aiming to use the time wisely to get the team back to winning ways ahead of that match.
He added: “We said that we needed a reaction from last weekend’s loss, and from some we got that but some I felt we didn’t.
“We do have leaders in the team – AJ Greaves and Branden Horton – I thought they were tremendous and had a great attitude from the first minute until the last, I thought they were really good and results like this hurt them.
“Hopefully those two can be the main driving force when we head to Lincoln in two weeks’ time as we aim to make sure we get our performances and results back up to scratch.”
