Head of sports science Rob Lee has outlined fitness plans for the players ahead of their return for the 2019/20 season.

The players will return for pre-season at the end of June and have been given fitness programmes to follow over close season to ensure they return in top condition.

Lee said: “We have three phases that the players will be doing. Initially they’ll have a repair and recovery phase where they are just psychology and physically recovering from a long season.

“They’ll then have a maintenance phase where they will try to tip themselves over and maintain body fat percentages, aerobic fitness, lower limb strength and mass, then towards the end of pre-season before they come back in, we will ramp it up and increase the frequency of sessions and the intensity so they’re ready for pre-season training.

“The lads know their targets, they know the thresholds of the targets that they have to be above or below so most of the players come back within them and it’s not too hard of a task. If there are any players outside of those ranges, we will work with them and do extra sessions.”

This season the club has introduced extra technology to assist with enhancing player fitness levels, something Lee thinks has helped with the quality of fitness witnessed this season.

He added: “Extra technology makes my life a lot easier because the GPS system we have in it helps us with quantifying what we’re doing on the pitch and it helps the manager, helps us top up players who haven’t been playing and the gym kit and bikes help us take care of injured players who can’t run on the grass.

“It helps us maintain our fitness levels and as you’ve seen this year we’ve had the same team every week and about 90% availability of all players all season so it has been brilliant.

“All plans we make are individual, so we give the players certain tests which we base their programmes off so their all personalised based on the player and the position they play.”
