Manager's challenge to captain Ben

28 November 2019

Rovers manager Darren Moore has challenged Ben Whiteman to finish the job he started and lead the club to promotion this season.

The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a long-term contract extension as the boss continued his long-term building strategy.

“It is wonderful news to have Ben extend his contract with us, he has been spot on since I came in during the summer in terms of his mentality and focus,” he said.

“He has been a joy to work with. There are aspects of his game he can still improve, but we’re working with him every day to make him even better and stronger.

“He is an influential player for us. Usually when he plays well the team is playing well as he is our quarter-back. He leads from the front and is very much engaged in what we are trying to do.”

One of the most important decisions for the manager to make in the summer was who to appoint captain.

He felt the attitude and drive shown by Ben during pre-season meant he was a perfect fit for the role.

“He is showing those leadership qualities, it’s why we made him team captain,” he added.

“There were two or three candidates, not that he needs it but from a mental aspect that responsibility has done him the world of good.”
