Gary McSheffrey felt the Rovers U23s side could have won by more after beating Rotherham United reserves 4-2 in the Central League Cup.

First-half goals from a trialist, Madger Gomes and Alex Kiwomya put Rovers in control, before Myron Gibbons sealed the victory late on.

He said: “I thought overall we could have made it more comfortable, when we played the ball quickly they couldn’t match us.

“We made it difficult for ourselves at times by being a little bit sloppy in possession so we need to cut those errors out.

“We got off to a good start but then let them back into the game and that allowed them to grow in confidence.”

With a young squad complemented by and handful of first-team players, McSheffrey was pleased with the way the side saw the game out.

He added: “It was nice to watch in the second-half because we managed it well and I’m pleased we got the win even if we should have had more goals.

“I believe that when we get the ball to our better players and move it quickly we can play through teams but that relies on good decision making.”
