Alfie May was delighted to get off the mark scoring a fantastic goal in Rovers’ 3-1 win over Lincoln City in Leasing.com Trophy.
The striker has played in all of Rovers’ Sky Bet League One games this season but admitted he’d been desperate for his first goal.
“I think maybe I’ve been trying a bit too hard to get my first goal but I’m buzzing to be off the mark. I said to Niall, I’d do anything for a goal – it’s just the best feeling to be off the mark for the season,” said May.
“I had to strike the ball first time, I had nothing left, my legs were gone so I knew I couldn’t take a touch. It set up nicely for me to hit it first time and it was spinning nicely to hit it first time so I did and obviously it went in.
“The main thing is that we’re going on winning runs and the team performance from the start of the season has been fantastic - the togetherness and winning mentality helps us come back from 1-0 down.”
May has had his most successful start to a season in a Rovers shirt and believes that confidence has played a big part in his current form.
“I feel like I’m getting on the ball more this season and I want to add something different to my game,” he said.
“I want to get at defenders and get assists like the one I got on Tuesday. I think I just need to believe more in the final third, Copps said that, he said to believe more whether it’s a shot, cross or whatever, I just have to have belief. I know I need to work on a few things in my game but it’s a work in progress.
“Confidence is massive in football. I was coming on in games last year and sometimes it can be difficult to get into the swing of things. The gaffer has had faith in me this season, and I’ve played almost every game. I’ve never played as many 90 minutes as I have this year. I feel fit and I’m pleased to be playing.”
