Alf Matthews born April 28, 1901
Bristol-born Alf spent most of his career in the South-West, making 138 League appearances for Exeter City and a further 142 for Plymouth Argyle, whom he helped earn promotion to Division Two in 1929-30.
In 1933 he moved north to join Rovers, making his debut in a 4-0 home win over Walsall on 7th September 1933.
The winger failed to secure a regular place and made only eight appearances, scoring once, before moving on to Crystal Palace, where he finished his career. He died in 1985, aged 84.
