Rover of the Day: Alonzo Drake

Alonzo Drake born April 16, 1884

Alonzo Drake joined Rovers from Parkgate Albion just before his 17th birthday and made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 win at Stockport County on 15th February 1902.

He finished the 1901-02 season with six goals from 13 appearances as Rovers finished 7th in Division Two in their maiden Football League season.

The following season he was less successful, scoring only once, before moving on to Sheffield United. His Rovers record was seven goals in 36 games.

He spent five seasons at Bramall Lane, his best being in 1904-05 when he scored nine League goals. He later played for Birmingham City and Queen’s Park Rangers. As Alonzo’s football career tailed off, his cricket came to the fore. He made his First-Class debut for Yorkshire in 1909 and went on to play 157 games up to 1914. He scored three centuries and took all 10 wickets in an innings against Somerset in 1914. Sadly, he died in 1919 aged only 34 after a battle with cance
