Rover of the Day: Gerry Daly

30 April 2020

Gerry Daly born 30th April 1954

Much-travelled Gerry was 34 when he signed for Rovers in July 1988, having played for Manchester United, Derby County and Coventry City among others, as well as earning 48 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

Rovers manager Dave Mackay appointed Gerry as captain, and he started the season well as Rovers kept pace with the leading pack in Division Four. However, a slump in form after Christmas coincided with a back injury for Gerry, and he became the butt of discontent from the terraces. With Mackay leaving, Billy Bremner returned in the summer of 1989 and Gerry found himself surplus to requirements, eventually moving to Telford United.

His record for Rovers was five goals in 43 senior matches.
