Rover of the Day: Reece Nicholson

4 April 2020

Rover of the Day is Reece Nicholson born April 4 1936.

Bircotes-born Reece joined Rovers as a 17-year-old in 1953 but did not make his debut until September 1954.

The highlight of the inside-forward’s debut season came when he stood in for Alick Jeffrey, unavailable due to international duty, in Rovers’ fifth round FA Cup tie at Birmingham City in February 1955, a game they lost 1-2.

His best season was 1957-58, when he scored 7 goals in 20 League appearances, but unfortunately this was not enough to save Rovers from relegation from Division Two.

His overall record for Rovers was eight goals in 30 appearances. He later played for Cambridge City and Worksop town, and died last March just short of his 83rd birthday.
