Rover of the Day: Ellis Wright

Ellis Wright July 7,1873.

Born in Shiregreen, Sheffield, Ellis signed for Rovers in 1895 having played for Ecclesfield.

He was a member of the teams that won the Midland League Championship in 1896-97 and 1898-99. He played in Rovers’ first Football League match on September 7 1901, a 3-3 draw with Burslem Port Vale at the Intake Ground. The half-back missed only three League games in 1901-02 as Rovers finished 7th in Division Two, still their highest placing. He featured for Rovers until 1905 when he retired from playing.

In all he made 80 Football League appearances for Rovers, but he played many more first-team games in over a decade of service to the club. He died in 1940, aged 67.
