Rover of the Day: John Breckin

27 July 2020

John Breckin born July 27, 1953

Sheffield-born full-back John has given tremendous service to Rotherham United as player, coach, caretaker-manager and is now the club’s honorary Life President.

He spent 12 seasons with the Millers as a player, during which time they were promoted from the Fourth Division to the Second. He made over 400 League appearances during this time.

In February 1983 he left to join Bury and later that year he signed for Rovers, making his debut in a 3-0 home win over Wrexham in August 1983. Although hampered by injury, John helped Rovers win promotion from Division Four as runners-up to York City. He left at the end of the season to join Burton Albion and then returned to Rotherham as a coach, working alongside managers George Kerr and Norman Hunter, with a brief spell in charge in December 1987.

John’s record for Rovers was 23 appearances with no goals.
