Rover of the Day: Peter Gilbert

31 July 2020

Peter Gilbert born July 31, 1983

A much-travelled left-back, Peter was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but began his professional career with Birmingham City. In 2003 he joined Plymouth Argyle, helping them to the Second Division Championship and earning Under-21 recognition for Wales. After a brief stay at Leicester City, he signed for Sheffield Wednesday in November 2005.

In January 2007 he was loaned to Rovers, to provide cover for Gareth Roberts, who was suspended following a red card in the inaugural League game at the Keepmoat Stadium. He made his debut in a 2-0 win over Darlington in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which Rovers went on to win that season. After five games with Rovers, he returned to Hillsborough, where he remained until August 2009 when he signed for Oldham Athletic. After that he played for six more clubs, including a brief stay at Californian side Sacramento Republic.
