Rover of the Day: Gordon Hopkinson

Gordon Hopkinson born June 19, 1933.

Defender Gordon was born in Sheffield and was signed by Rovers manager Peter Doherty from Beighton Miners’ Welfare in June 1957.

He made his debut in November in a 1-4 defeat at Fulham and he went on to make 10 appearances in total for Rovers, though none after Boxing Day 1957.

Doherty left Rovers in January 1958 and moved on to Bristol City. In July 1958 he signed Gordon who went on to make over 70 appearances for the Ashton Gate side.

After a spell with non-League Cheltenham Town, Gordon went on to play in Canada and the USA, although he spent the 1965-66 season with Southern League Margate. He was later assistant head coach to the Canadian national team.
